Mrs. W. is a 40-year-old woman who fell in her driveway and broke her leg. I received a call from her husband who asked me to meet them in the emergency room. On my way to the ER, I made some calls to find the name of a good orthopedic surgeon, just in case surgery was going to be needed. Once it was decided that surgery was necessary, I prepared Mrs. W for what would be happening to her before, during and after her surgery. I was available to answer her questions by email or phone as well as visiting her at home.
After the surgery I gave her advice on how best to take pain medications, what to eat and drink to prevent constipation, the best way to take a shower with a cast. I went to her first doctor’s appointment after the surgery and helped to interpret what was said and what the next steps were in the healing process. There were many additional bits of advice and encouragement that allowed for healing and peace of mind during her recovery process.
The most important part is that you don’t have to think of everything yourself. Mrs. W. made a good recovery and is back to her normal mobility. |
